It’s truly a family affair for the Baar clan when it comes to their involvement in the Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.
Carri Baar specifically has a long and rich history with the private club which opened nearly 40 years ago and spans 17 acres. The club once again is playing host to the 114th Annual SCTA Junior Sectionals concluding with the finals on Monday.
Baar’s father, Jack Cameron, was instrumental in building the famed Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates and later moved over to Fountain Valley to help build Los Cab before its opening in 1977.
Baar started working at the club on her college breaks from UCLA, and has been full-time since 1998, and has served as the marketing and sales director at the club since 2001.
Especially for her own children, as her youngest son Brendan recently graduated from Marina High and played tennis for four years.
Baar relayed a funny story about reminding her children that Sectionals were fast approaching and to steer clear of her office as it is used by SCTA staff during the tournament. “No changing swimsuits or just hanging out,” she said. “It’s Sectionals week. We love the Sectionals.”
Main draw play in singles began at Los Cab on Wednesday and the tournament concludes with the finals on Monday. The Los Cab club has 23 outdoor lighted tennis courts, 16 racquetball/handball courts, two squash courts and a paddle tennis area.
Baar is married to Los Cab Director of Tennis Chris Baar, a former collegiate and pro circuit player who has been at the club since 1997.
Carri and Chris have six children including sons Justin, Ian, Josh and Brendan and daughters Lindsey and Olivia. “We’re like the Brady Bunch,” Carri said.
With the big 40-year anniversary just a year away, Carri said it means only bigger and better tournament and activities that Los Cab will continue to put on for its members. “We have incredible members and they coming out and watching the next generation of stars during the Sectionals,” Baar said. “Once again we are hoping for some big crowds over the weekend to enjoy the great tennis.”
